Here are some collections of online music and art resources that you can use with your students. Resources are alphabetized within each category.


Music Resources

  • Classical Music MIDI Page
    MIDI files of famous composers' works.
  • J.S. Bach Home Page
    This very comprehensive site includes information about Bach including his life, a catalog of his complete works, recommended recordings, and links to other sites. See also IPL Bach Page.
  • George Frederick Handel MIDI Music Page
    Contains MIDI files of some of Handel's best known works. See also Geocities Handel Page and IPL Handel Page.
  • K-12 Resources for Music Educators
    This site from Minnesota contains links to K-12, commercial, and MIDI music resources.
  • Music Education Online: a Guide to K-12 Music Education
    This page is designed to aid music educators, students and parents in connecting with a variety of music education resources located on the Internet as well as providing an interactive bulletin board for posting questions and comments on music. The "Music Links" page organizes resources by strings, woodwinds, percussion, vocal, etc.
  • Music History 102
    A guide to Western composers and their music from the Middle Ages to the present, by Robert Sherrane, Cataloging librarian, The Juilliard School, New York .
  • Music Theory
    Ricci Adams' site introduces you to clefs, note duration, and everything a beginner needs to know about music theory and notation.
  • The Musical Scientist
    This site teaches the physics of sound and the history of musical instruments in a "fun" way. Kids build toy instruments and prepare demonstrations that explain sound waves, sound transmission, and other principles relevant to music.
  • The Vermont MIDI Project
    The Vermont MIDI Project is an exemplary site that deals with student music composition. Teaching composition is certainly more than learning how to use software or simply asking students to "create something". Explore the site to find out about the tenets of music composition and the lessons these teachers have learned over the past ten years.

Art Resources

  • A. Pintura, Art Detective
    A. Pintura: Art Detective is designed for fourth graders and up. It is a clever, online game about art history and art composition. In the game, you play a 1940's noir detective with a degree in art history.
  • ArtsConnectEd
    This is a huge, interactive site sponsored by the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Walker Art Center, and MCI WorldCom. Here, students can interact with works of art and music just as a curator can annotate and design a collection.
  • Artsedge: Teaching Materials
    Formerly known as the Kennedy Center's Curriculum Studio, the teaching materials site is designed to provide K-12 teachers with curriculum materials, programs, strategies, and other information relating to the performing arts and to national education goals.
  • Crayons and Computers
    Arts and crafts projects for kids, by Carol Sabbeth. The computer is used to design these projects so that kids can use it as a creative device. A new art lesson will appear each month at this Web site.
  • Kidspace
    The Internet Public Library, sponsored by the University of Michigan, has a Kidspace area with many features for young students. Check the Art, Music, and Museums section.
  • PapaInk: The International Children's Art Archive
    PapaInk is a non-profit organization celebrating children's creative spirit. Their archival work also highlights the socially critical efforts of organizations and individuals who enable children's artistic endeavors.
  • Web Wonders: Virtual Museums and Tours (compiled by Lindsey Verble)
    • Westminster Abbey with historical information, including a list of the kings and queens of England entombed within the Abbey's walls; also contains audio files.
    • Sistine Chapel with thumbnail photos of the famous ceiling and Last Judgment which you can click to enlarge.
