Elementary Science LessonCreating Clear Learning Objectives
IntroductionA typical kindergarten science field trip has students gather "September Seeds". Since native plants vary from locale to locale, students in different states will have access to different types of seeds. Using telecommunications, your students can compare their findings with those of other students thousands of miles away. The Franklin Institute developed a unit called Living Things. It addresses national science standards and includes several interactive forums that invite student collaboration. One of the links on Living Things takes you to a unit on invasive weeds, developed by the US Bureau of Land Management. Here is a good opportunity to learn about the weeds in your neighborhood, how they survive, and how they spread their seeds.
Step 1. Creating Clear Learning ObjectivesLocate the content standards you need to address. We've selected two of the Texas standards for scientific processes at the Kindergarten level to serve as the learning objectives for this example.
This unit should introduce the use of simple investigations and fieldwork to help students develop the skills of asking questions, gathering information, communicating findings, and making informed decisions. Using their own senses and common tools such as a hand lens, students make observations and collect information. Students are also introduced to the concepts of survival and mutual dependency of living things.
